1. General Introduction
The Dan Nhi, also known as the Vietnamese two-string fiddle, is a traditional bowed string instrument widely used in Vietnamese folk music. In Son La Province, it plays an important role in the cultural life of ethnic groups such as the Thai, Hmong, Dao, and Kho Mu.

2. Distinctive Features

- Structure: The Dan Nhi consists of a small cylindrical resonator, often made of wood or bamboo, with one end covered by python or snake skin. It has a long neck (60–80 cm) and two silk or metal strings.

- Playing Technique: The musician uses a bow placed between the two strings, pulling it back and forth while adjusting finger pressure and placement to create smooth, expressive sounds.

- Sound Quality: The Dan Nhi produces mellow, lyrical, and emotional tones, ideal for expressing stories, longing, and heartfelt emotions.

3. Cultural Significance

- A key instrument in traditional folk ensembles, accompanying folk songs, Xoe dances, and Hmong khèn performances.

- Commonly featured in weddings, New Year celebrations, spring festivals, and local community events.

- Often used to tell stories through music, express romantic feelings, nostalgia, or spiritual reflection.
