Shan Tuyet Tea – Son La

Tea and coffee

Giới thiệu

1. General Introduction
Shan Tuyet tea is a rare, ancient tea variety that grows naturally in high mountainous areas at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,000 meters above sea level. In Son La, particularly in Ta Xua (Bac Yen), Phieng Cam (Thuan Chau), and Ngoc Chien (Muong La), Shan Tuyet tea is hand-harvested and traditionally processed by local ethnic communities, resulting in a unique flavor found nowhere else.

2. Distinctive Features

- Large tea leaves covered with white “snow-like” hairs, hence the name “Shan Tuyet” (Snow Mountain Tea).

- Taste: Lightly bitter at first, followed by a lingering sweet aftertaste. The tea liquor has a golden hue and a natural aroma of young rice and mountain wood.

- Ancient tea trees: Many are over 100–300 years old.

3. Notable Growing Areas

- Ta Xua, Bac Yen District – Famous for high-altitude tea (above 1,500m).

- Phieng Cam, Thuan Chau District – Known for traditional wood-fired processing.

- Ngoc Chien, Muong La District – Blends Shan Tuyet tea with the cultural identity of the Thai, H’Mong, and La Ha ethnic groups.

4. Processing Method
The tea is hand-picked, selecting only the "one bud, two leaves" standard. It is then naturally withered, pan-fired manually over wood stoves, and stored in bamboo containers to preserve its aroma. Each batch requires high skill and patience.
